Check your bandwidth speed

Check your Blackberry's data speed by using inputting this link http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed into your borwser.  Then click on one of the files and the rest is automatic.  I was only able to test using a 600K file.  When using the 200K file, it prompted that my speed was too high to test.  sweet!  There's even a wap link.

Since RIM has began outsourcing their technology, it's only a matter of time before we begin to see products that will rival the Blackberry.  Although this is a bit beyond the scope of my blog, I figured it's worth giving everyone a taste of things to come.  More info on EnGadget.

7510 HTML Browser

Until now, the Nextel 7520 running the latest OS upgrade was the only blackberry device running web client that had a free HTML browser (called Internet Browser) courteousy of Nextel; which traditionally was only available for BES users.  If you try uploading the service books manually from the 7520 onto a 7510, it is possible to get the Internet browser.  Download the file here.  I found this info from a BBForum post.

OS 4.0.0.319

BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.0.0.319 is out.  It's an upgrade to the existing OS.  Some of the highlights of the upgardes includes the addition of a passwork keeper and a HTML Browser!!!  Note:  The HTML browser that magically appeared on my 7520 after the .319 upgrade was suggested by forum members that what I have is the either the new HTML browser or the BES browser.  How'd that happen?  The Blackberry itself still mystifies me.

The upgrade and some of the features of this upgrade can be found here.  Note that the file is a Windows self executable file (22.6MB) and will install into the 7520 the next time you synch your BB into your computer.  Installing this OS will erase all applications on your BB but none of the data will be affected unless you disable the autobackup option during installation.

Bluetooth Profiles

It is said that RIM prides itself with its security being one of its major areas of concerns.  Europe has already experianced the damage caused by bluesnarfers and phreakers hijacking cell phone capabilities via bluetooth, it is no suprise that the 7520 and other models only support an audio profile.  Here's an article from Mark Rejhon submitted to the RIM java developer's forum.  I pasted a portion of it below.

My Nextel Order Experience

I could not find a single cell phone retailer in my vicinity that carried the blackberry so I decided to phone Nextel Direct. I placed an order and haggled for a better price thinking that they are making more from me since I am buying them direct.

Why I chose the blackberry

It was near end of the year when I joined Nextel. My current carrier contract has expired for about a year and I wasn’t very impressed with their service and product line. I should also add that my cell phone was so beat up that it failed to work properly which allowed me to draw inference to whether it was the carrier’s fault or my phone. I wanted my next cell phone to be tough yet handle all the workload I needed to throw into it.

Welcome to my blog

Hello all.  Shopping for a blackberry is not easy. Nearly every cell phone carrier in the US and Canada, if not all, are offering the blackberry device on their product line. With each cell phone carrier in the states alone carrying different versions of the Blackberry product line in addition to the varying protocols of each carrier service, it complicates the consumer (and corporate) buying decision even more. I am starting this blog to log my experience as a Nextel user of the 7520 and hope it can help encourage potential blackberry customers to make an educated buying decision as well as to promote the use of the BB as a really neat tool of life.  I started this blog in early April and have much to catch up on.  Any methods of contributions are welcomed; enjoy.
